Last night, Mr.G, little K and I were invited by my in-laws for a family dinner at Balboa Restaurant located at 4th Level, East Wing, Shangri-La Plaza Mall. It is an Italian-American restaurant whose name inspiration is Sylvester Stallone’s character in the film “Rocky Balboa”. We were already late for the appointment because little K had some sort of uh..business needed to be attended to first so anyway, when we arrived, the parentals have already ordered. The restaurant’s specialties are pastas, steaks and pizzas but they also serve burgers, sandwiches and salads.
We started with Crème of Pumpkin Soup. The soup is good for 1 person and is served with a piece of garlic bread. It’s slightly creamy and the pumpkin taste is not too sweet, just the way I like it. However, since this was ordered before we arrived; the soup has already gone cold.
Mother-in-law, being an adventurous foodie despite having problems with her blood pressure, ordered Louis Armstrong – a 16” all meat pizza! It’s a thin crust pizza topped with generous servings of pepperoni, pancetta, sausage and cheese. It was filling but we managed to finish the whole pizza!
Next we tried Nashville which is bacon steak with eggs and potato cubes on the side. It is served with a sauce but I didn’t put any on mine because the meat is already flavorful and juicy and it has that bacon-y taste we’re all addicted to. Clearly, I was the only one who enjoyed this entrée. The parentals are conscious of their BP’s so they just had a bite or two while Mr. G said it was good but didn’t want eating much fat.
Of course you can’t eat in an Italian restaurant without trying any of their pastas so we got Spagna (familia size). It is beef stroganoff fusilli served with 2 slices of garlic bread. I love everything about this dish especially how tender the beef was.
Towards the end of our dinner, little K was in the mood for playing so she went to her “Po-po” (grandfather) and tugged him towards the game center we passed by earlier. Meanwhile, Mother-in-law, Mr. G and I decided to have their S’mores Skillet for dessert while waiting for the grandfather-granddaughter pair to return.
Of all the dishes we’ve tried, I think we all agree that the pizza and the pasta were the best. If I would rate this restaurant, I would give it a 4 for good ambiance and generally delicious food. If you happen to crave Italian food, this restaurant is worth checking out.
